Travel Photography

Travel Photography is a personal adventure in a place you have chosen for various reasons. The images one takes serve as reminders of time spent in a different space.

Commercial Photographs

When shooting products, one encounters the challenge of representing the item and describing the overall detail with enough light to make the item appear to be 3 dimensional.

Portraits

Portraits always make me wonder....What were they thinking about when this image was taken?  Does this image reflect their personality or is the photographer's  personality reflecting back through their portrait?

My Artist Statement

I have a very cosmopolitan family.  The blend of different cultures provide the background for how I express what I see as a photographer.  I appreciate the differences that make us unique as people and the countries or places we call home.  At the same time I am compelled to show the disparities in lifestyles caused by economic and /or educational lack.  Politics drives me to create photographs that are thought provoking, causing others to alter their points of view.

I enjoy nature to the fullest.  The colors of nature and light attract my eyes.  I can spend hours looking at trees, plants, animals, flowers, spider webs, rocks mushrooms, bugs, or water.  I love to "see" and "show" the intricacies of the patterns found in nature.  The shapes, forms and lines cause me to stop and stare as I try to use my camera to describe to others what I "see".

In contrast I also enjoy the patterns found in architecture or other manmade structures.  I try to convey the lines and depth along with form and texture of what I see so it appears to have dimension.  This is enhanced by the color and contrast of the light at that particular time.

What allows me to enjoy what I see is light.  The light, reflected or not, determines the mood of my photograph.  The mood influences the viewer's response to my picture.  Any response to my work lets me know my image is successful.

The subject of my photograph is determined by my intent or purpose for stopping time at that particular moment.  Whether or not I share my work depends on my intent.  Most of the time, my intent is personal and very directed.  I create the photograph to educate, bring attention to or document and highlight a particular issue or to create something that only exists because I want it to.

I would like to create socially expressive at work. I would like my work to showcase national and global issues.  I would like to use my art work to encourage an appreciation for experimental/alternative photographic methods.

My work is influenced by photographers such as Carol Thorner, Irving Penn, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lang, Imogen Cunningham, Man Ray, Harry Callahan, Sam Abell and many others.  I am grateful that William Henry Talbot discovered the paper negative process.  Photography is an art form that allows me to express my definition of light at a given moment in time.
